March 24th, 2008Making A Difference
Chinook Enterprises, a local non-profit providing job placement and training for individuals with disabilities, was the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce Making a Difference Award winner for 2007.

Chinook Enterprises was incorporated as a private-not-for-profit organization in 1980, and started job placement and training from a small, one-room office. Chinook Enterprises now has over 12,000 square feet of offices and production facilities, with forty staff members serving between 250 and 300 people with a wide range of disabilities annually. The 2008 budget for Chinook Enterprises is $2.5 million. 54% of this funding comes from commercial contracts, 45% from state governmental contracts, and 1% from donations.

Chinook Grounds Division operates as a fully licensed landscaping company and maintains just over 160 acres each week. Contracts include the Port of Anacortes Marina and Airport, the United General Hospital campus, Skagit Valley Hospital Campus, Skagit Valley College, Port of Skagit County and LaConner Marina, and Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in LaConner.

Chinook Assembly Division makes over 12,000 different parts for the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company. These are interior parts and are used in 747’s, 767’s and some for 777’s. In addition, Chinook Enterprises has contracts with Boeing Services Division where they make the protective window covers for the 737’s. They also cut parts to length and cut “elephant hide”, a protective material, which is used to cover the floor of the wings and fuel tanks of the aircraft during assembly to protect them from incidental damage.

Chinook Enterprises makes custom lobby display units for Peoples Banks of the Northwest. They also make specialty wooden boxes for Boeing’s measuring equipment and jigs and fixtures to prevent damage during transit.

Chinook Enterprises is ISO 9001-2000 certified since 2000, AS-9100 certified since 2001, accredited for Three Years by CARF (accredits vocational rehabilitation organizations) since 1983, and a Vendor in Good Standing with the Washington State Department of Purchasing since 2004.

“Chinook Enterprises’ board and staff are proud to be recognized by the leadership of the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce for the work Chinook Enterprises does in the Skagit County Business Community,” said Rob Martin, Executive Director, Chinook Enterprises.
