On Friday, April 25, 2008 local Wal-Mart store Manager Tim Labrensz,
Community Donation Manager Kathy Patula and a number of store associates presented Mayor Bud Norris and Police Chief Ken Bergsma with a check in the amount of $5,000 to be used for purchasing new surveillance cameras for use in the downtown business area. The new surveillance cameras will be placed on buildings and poles along Main Street.
Over the previous three years, Mayor Norris and the City Council have initiated an aggressive surveillance camera policy within City parks and the downtown business area. Surveillance cameras assist police departments by providing a stored record of past activity. There are currently eight installed surveillance cameras in the downtown area and the City will be installing eight more within the next month. Also, there are currently sixteen surveillance cameras located throughout the City’s Park system.
Mayor Norris said “On behalf of the City, I want to thank the local Wal-Mart store managers and associates for their generous contribution to our citizens. We can now purchase additional surveillance cameras for our downtown business area, and that benefits the entire community.”

National Work Readiness Council Call for Nominees
The National Work Readiness Council (NWRC) is in the process of redesigning its four exams. The classification systems detailing the domains and skills of entry level employment to be tested require validation. For the purpose of validating these systems NWRC needs front line managers and supervisors of entry level employees to review and rate the classification systems, which will guide the development of exam items.
Please nominate (or self-nominate) an individual who currently serves as a front line manager and/or supervisor of entry level workers to participate in this validation process. Selected individuals will be directed to a website where they will respond to a series of survey questions. This task will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
You can find the application on the Mount Vernon Chamber Website under Programs - Workforce Development.
