Highland Games Festival July 12-13
Many of the sights and sounds of Scotland will be found at the Skagit Valley Highland Games in Mount Vernon, WA, July 12-13, 2008 at Edgewater Park. Now in its fourteenth year, this Scottish festival has grown by leaps and bounds and is widely regarded as one of the top Highland Games in the Pacific Northwest and lower Mainland of BC. So if you have seen one Highland Games, have you seen them all? “Not even close,” says Director Skye K. Richendrfer.
“Ours is an amazing event – a veritable Scottish three-ring circus; it is an overused cliché, but we truly have something for everyone,” Richendrfer said.
This year’s Skagit Valley Highland Games features one of top Sheepdog trials in the region. Approximately 30 dogs and their handlers will be competing for prize money. Solo pipers and drummers, massed pipe bands, championship Highland Dancing, traditional Scottish athletic events, arts crafts and food vendors, a beer garden, knights in armor, harpists, fiddlers, traditional folk music – those are all popular favorites. But how about this? For lovers of fine single malt whisky, the “Whiskys of the World” tent affords the opportunity to compare several single malts from Scotland, to an Irish whisky, a bourbon whisky or a Canadian whisky. This fun and informative event is presented for the Highland Games by a “Master of Scotch” from Diageo, one of the world’s largest spirits companies.
Another popular attraction is the Scottish Clan tent area, where representatives of many of the ancient Scottish families (clans) provide assistance on genealogy research and offer colorful stories and legends about their respective families.
Ticket prices vary; $10 for an adult day pass, $8 for students, seniors and active military personal. Family passes (4 people) are available for $25. Weekend passes are also available – all tickets may be purchased ahead of time online at www.celticarts.org, or on the day of the event at the entrance to the festival.
The Skagit Valley Highland Games are presented by the Celtic Arts Foundation, a Skagit County-based 501(c)(3) non profit organization. In addition to producing the Highland Games, the Foundation also presents the “Mastery of Scottish Arts Concert” at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall each February, and a number of other concerts and related Celtic artistic activities in the Pacific Northwest.

Skagit Valley College Instructor Wins Prestigious Tobias Wolff Award in Fiction
Skagit Valley College English instructor Ted O’Connell recently won the Tobias Wolff Award for Fiction for his short story, “The Hunting Horn.” O’Connell’s story competed against more than 500 entries from across the United States to win the award, sponsored by the Bellingham Review. The story will be published in the Spring 2009 issue of the Bellingham Review.
The story’s primary subjects are a dying parent and a strained father/son relationship. Competition judge Ann Pancake commented on how the story is full of “steady, quiet surprises.” “I was impressed by the taut balance of humor and pathos, by the deft selection of revelatory detail, and by the way the language was both elegant and surprising,” she said. The judge also praised O’Connell’s highly original approach to the subjects and ingenuity in sidestepping the expected move in favor of the illuminating one.
“The first draft came from an exercise in a graduate school class,” O’Connell said. “I revised the draft perhaps 30 times. I was taking risks experimentally, and I found a narrative device that made the whole thing click.”
O’Connell has been inspired by other experimental writers, including Franz Kafka, Donald Barthelme and Jeannette Winterson.
The award also comes with a $1,000 cash prize. O’Connell, who plays the mandolin with the Prozac Mountain Boys, said he may use the money to buy “an octave mandolin or something funky like that.”
The fiction award is named after author Tobias Wolff. Wolff is a professor at Stanford University best known for his short stories and memoirs. He lived in Washington state as a boy, and attended Concrete High School. Wolff wrote about his time in Washington and the dynamics of life with his mother and stepfather in the critically acclaimed 1989 memoir, “This Boy’s Life.”

Volunteer for Washington Business Week at WWU and Develop Professionally while Helping Students Succeed
Western Washington University will host the Business Week program August 9-16th, and is looking for Company Advisors to match their increased enrollment of students. Take this chance to experience professional development and teach students about business. Since Business Week was created by AWB in 1976, over 45,000 students have experienced the in-depth, hands on experience in business, teamwork, free enterprise and career exploration. Each summer over 100 individuals dedicate a full week to mentoring students at Business Week and they have the full support of their employer. experience personally and also enhance their own leadership, communication and group facilitation skills.

In return it is one of the best hands on professional training opportunities available for yourself or your employees. Stan McNaughton, President/CEO of PEMCO refers to Business Week as a “virtual leadership laboratory” and strongly encourages his team members to volunteer. Jim Hutchinson, a dentist in Olympia has been a volunteer advisor for ten years and describes it as the best week of his year, every year. On top of that the Business Week program is developing our work force and helping prepare our youth to meets the needs of the business community.
Circus Elephant Coming to Mount Vernon with Air Play Party Rentals
Air Play Party Rental is adding a circus elephant. Luckily it's of the inflatable type. This true to life creation is made by Cutting Edge Creations located in Eagan, Minnesota. They are one of last companies of it's type still manufactoring in America. The process got rolling when Mike McDaniel (owner) noticed the smaller elephant on a inflatable play structure last November in Orlando. I called and asked if they could scale it up to 25' tall. It is the first one they have ever made. My car dealer clients are going to love it! The new elephant creation's retail cost is $8,300.
What's next for Air Play Party Rental? Around the first quarter of 2009 we are working on adding a new line of tenting colors. The new offering will be called the "Caribbean Breeze Collection". They are going to be bright and warm color combinations.
