Lieutenant Governor Habib Visits Skagit County to Discuss Economic Development Opportunities




Washington Lieutenant Governor Cyrus Habib visited Skagit County on October 2 to learn about local economic development initiatives, and to meet with businesses, organizations, and community members driving the economy to discuss priority issues and opportunities.  EDASC and Chinook Enterprises of Mount Vernon partnered to invite Lieutenant Governor Habib to Skagit County and coordinate his visit.  Lieutenant Governor Habib serves as Washington’s Chief Opportunity Officer, and his visit to Skagit County offered an opportunity to introduce him to the extensive regional partnerships working together to advance economic growth and create new opportunities for all members of the Skagit County community.

Welcome Cindy Brooks, SBDC Certified Business Advisor




Cindy Brooks recently joined EDASC and the Washington Small Business Development Center (SBDC), administered by Washington State University, as the new SBDC Certified Business Advisor serving Skagit, San Juan, and Island Counties.  She is a lifelong resident of Western Washington and brings experience from two decades of small business ownership and entrepreneurial endeavors in the health and wellness industry.  She is a graduate of Presidio Graduate School, with an MBA in Sustainable Systems.  Please join us in welcoming Cindy to the Skagit County community!

Skagit Valley Innovation Partnership Zone Renewed


The Washington State Department of Commerce on October 2 renewed the Skagit Valley Value-Added Agriculture Innovation Partnership Zone (IPZ), as part of the state’s efforts to help spur regional economic growth through key sectors such as manufacturing, global health and technology.

“Innovation Partnership Zones is an important tool that helps communities determine for themselves their economic future. It strengthens communities by facilitating a thoughtful and strategic planning process that ultimately converts into opportunities for new and targeted job growth.  I congratulate the newest member of our vibrant IPZ community, the North Central Washington Technology Zone, and the ongoing successes of those in Vancouver and Skagit Valley,” said Brian Bonlender, state Commerce director.

October 5:  “Grow Your Business Internationally” Workshop with Washington Export Outreach Team.  Join this half-day workshop to learn the fundamentals of exporting and expanding your business into international markets.  Participants can sign up for one-on-one consultation sessions with export experts to help answer your questions and get your business plan started.  This workshop will take place at the Port of Everett (Blue Heron Room) from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm; registration is $20.  Registration and event information.

October 7:  Long Live Farms Field Day at Viva Farms.  Fun for the whole family!  Meet our farmers and learn about our partners.  Activities include a hay ride and farm tour, a tour of the mobile poultry processing unit, free pony rides for kids, food, and much more.  Viva Farms is located at the corner of State Highway 20 and Higgins Airport Way west of Burlington.  For more information visit www.vivafarms.org or call (360) 969-7191.

October 12:  Mount Vernon School District 100% Graduation.  Join the Mount Vernon Schools, Skagit Valley College and Western Washington University to learn about ways you can help make a difference in achieving the vision of a community where every student graduates prepared for success in post-secondary education, careers, and life.  This event will take place at Skagit Valley College’s Multipurpose Room (Knutzen Cardinal Center), 2405 E. October 12:  Guardian Northwest Title Company Open House.  Please help us welcome COO/Senior Vice President Jarrod Ball to our team by joining us for traditional Oktoberfest music, beer, and food!  The Open House will take place October 12 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 1301-B Riverside Drive in Mount Vernon.

By October 13:  Information Session on Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program in Construction Trades.  ANEW, in partnership with WorkSource Skagit and the Northwest Workforce Council, offers a four-week, full-time pre-apprenticeship training in Construction Trades to eligible individuals from October 23 through November 17.  This training is offered at no cost to those meeting eligibility requirements.  Information sessions will take place at WorkSource Skagit, 2005 E.
