Skagit Valley College Chemistry dept to work with 700 La Venture Middle School students for National Chemistry Week

In celebration of National Chemistry Week, Skagit Valley College Chemistry Instructor Dr. Roxi Smith and the SVC Chemistry Department will visit La Venture Middle School next week (Thursday, October 26 and Friday, October 27) to work with students in the science classrooms. Dr. Smith will be taking about 20 students from SVC and will visit 23 classrooms. Lots of great visuals to see with the student and faculty interactions!

National Chemistry Week is the American Chemical Society’s premier annual outreach activity.  It is celebrated each year during the 4th week of October.  During this week, chemists around the country conduct many public outreach activities with the single purpose of raising public awareness of the importance of chemistry in everyday life.  I’ve attached a fact sheet that comes from the American Chemical Society.  I have also provided a link to the National Chemistry Week (NCW) web page.  https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/education/outreach/ncw.html

The Puget Sound chapter of the American Chemical Society will conduct many National Chemistry Week outreach activities up and down the I-5 corridor, with the largest outreach activity occurring here in Skagit County between Skagit Valley College and La Venture Middle School.  Over 20 students and faculty from Skagit Valley College will spend two days with the nearly 700 students at La Venture Middle School.  They will visit every science classroom and interact directly with each student. This activity will not only highlight NCW for the Puget Sound area, but it will also kick off the numerous coordinated events that take place between the science programs at SVC and LVMS for the 2017-18 academic year.
