Downtown Mount Vernon Kicking Off the Spirit of the Spud

Mount Vernon Downtown Association celebrates our local farming community showcasing the beautiful and bountiful harvest of Skagit Valley potatoes. In 2011 they will salute The Red Potato Growers Association, home of “America’s Reddest Reds”, a group of family farms who honor generations of experience upholding their traditions by continually displaying a sense of community, pride, quality and diversity.

Throughout the year the Mount Vernon Downtown Association has many potato related family fun events planned. In September they will conclude the year of celebration by attempting to break the Guinness World Book of Records for Potatoes AuGratin. The diversity of farms will allow them to source all ingredients needed within a 10 mile radius.

In a custom crafted pan, heated by propane they will cook:

  • 15,000 lbs. sliced red potatoes
  • 400 lbs. cheese
  • 200 gallons cream
  • 100 lbs. onion
  • 50 lbs. garlic

The celebration brings awareness to and supports Skagit Valley farmers. In following food from farm to plate they have learned that respect for the land and a conscientious connection between people and their environment is vital to the thriving agricultural community. Get your spud jokes ready, and get ready to get serious about Skagit’s famous potatoes. As they lead up to a Guinness Book of World Records-shattering Potato Au Gratin attempt on September 24, 2011. There’s no end of hot potato action coming up.
