Improvements for Mount Vernon Streets

Improvements to three city streets will likely cause delays in the weeks ahead.

The City is investing $1.2 million for its 2021 street improvement program to resurface damaged roads. Heavily traveled portions of Laventure, Fir, and Little Mountain Roads will have smoother driving surfaces when construction wraps up at the end of August.

Until that time, residents are encouraged to give themselves a little extra time to get where they need to go when they are traveling on the following streets:

Little Mountain Road (from Little Mountain Park entrance to city limits line):

Project timeline is Tuesday, July 13 to Monday, July 19; with longer delays on the 13th & 14th from 7:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.

Laventure Road (from Section to College Way):

Project timeline is Monday, July 19th to Tuesday, August 24th; with the longest delays between 7:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M. on July 26-28, and again on August 2-4.

Fir Street (from Laventure to (almost) Waugh Rd):

Project timeline is Thursday, July 22 to Thursday, August 26th; with longer delays between 7:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M. on July 29 & 30, and again on August 5-6. This project paves over the water line improvements that Skagit PUD has made.

In 2016, Mount Vernon voters overwhelmingly approved a local transportation benefit district—a .2% sales tax increase that would be dedicated to local transportation improvements. The establishment of this district provides revenue to address years of deferred maintenance. Residents can expect continued improvements to transportation infrastructure in the years ahead.

Maintaining and improving our streets, sidewalks, trails, and bridges is a crucial part of Mount Vernon’s continued growth. Hopefully we can be patient through the construction process; knowing how enjoyable it will be to drive, bike and walk through our city in the months and years ahead.
