Although Skagit County remains in Phase 2 and many traditional celebrations have changed, we encourage you to keep gardening throughout the holiday weekend! Gardening offers fresh air and sunshine while also increasing your vitamin D levels and decreasing stress. Gardening is one of the best and most productive things you can do to for your well-being.

Wishing you a relaxing, safe, and (for now) socially distanced Independence Day.

“We didn’t realize we were making memories,

we just knew we were having fun.”

What a year 2020 has been - a year of disappointments, heartbreak, and uncertainty. It's also been a year of silver linings, such as gaining a deeper appreciation for all the people and activities we may have taken for granted. It’s certainly been a year that calls for patience, compassion, and reflection.

Here in Primrose, we’ve been working to find ways to add some lightness and joy during these serious, uncertain times. It may seem trivial but we believe that in times like these, it’s essential to take breaks and simply play. If there was ever a time to swing in a hammock, run through the sprinkler, or pitch a tent in the backyard, this is the year!

To celebrate the essentialness of play, we have filled Primrose with a wonderful selection of books, puzzles, and summer yard games, including croquet sets, Bocce ball for kids, paddle ball sets, Boomerangs, and kites! We have kites in a variety of shapes - including butterflies, bees, and ladybugs - and there’s a fabulous kite-flying field right here at the Nursery. For those seeking a healthy dose of fresh air, we have hiking guidebooks, outdoor cookbooks, travel hammocks, hiking socks, vintage camping gear, and a fabulous selection of summer hats.

The shop is still filled with lovely antique finery and vintage treasures, but we’ve sprinkled in playful, outdoorsy items for the summer season. We know it may sound a bit unconventional but somehow it all comes together beautifully. Best of all, it’s fun! After all, where else can you find kites and antique chandeliers, all under the same roof?

This summer, be safe, stay healthy, and remember to play!

Etsy Store Due to Open Mid-July!

Etsy Store Due to Open Mid-July!

Primrose Antiques & Gifts is launching its new Etsy store mid-July (not July 6) featuring high quality, hand-curated antique and vintage items.

Antiques will follow the lead of the European Garden aesthetic that Toni and John Christianson have cultivated over the years at Christianson's Nursery. Toni's antique collections emphasize French and English pieces that include ironstone, garden tools, bridal tiaras, French boudoir boxes, architectural salvage, and more.

Follow Primrose Antiques & Gifts on Instagram and Facebook as a place to expect the unexpected and to be part of our antique community where wonderful vintage and antique items will be listed.

Midsummer Antique Fair & Vintage Market is Canceled for 2020

Due to the uncertain nature of social gatherings due to Skagit County's Phase 2 requirements and in consideration of our customers and staff, we made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Midsummer Antique Fair. We will immediately begin to issue credit and refunds for all ticket purchases and vendor spaces sold. Thanks for your understanding.

Pre-order Roses and Peony Roots

Christianson’s is now taking pre-orders for our wonderfully hardy peony roots to be picked up at the Garden Store this Fall. Our superior tuberous roots are propagated from mature, field-grown plants to provide a better jump start for your ornamental or cutting garden. Fall is the perfect time to plant trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials. Our warm soil allows roots to continue to grow into winter so by Spring we'll have more established plants.

We are also taking pre-orders for returning rose varieties found in our Rose List 2020. Having experienced an increased interest in rose gardening over the past several years, taking pre-orders will help us order accurate quantities for those who have already decided which roses to add to their garden next year and those just discovering their preferences.

Visit the "Perennials" page at ChristiansonsNursery.com to download our Fall Peony Catalogue and the "Roses" page to download our Rose List 2020. To pre-order peonies and roses, visit the Garden Store, call 360-466-3821 or email us Staff.Christiansons@gmail.com.

Ask John!

John loves hearing from his customers and they love to ask him questions! Each conversation features a question submitted by someone like you.

Q: Hi John, The peach tree I purchased last year has leaves that are curling. Is it an insect or a disease? Thanks. -Dirk, Snohomish, WA

A: Hello Dirk, You are not alone this year with a rather common disease; Peach Leaf Curl. The most disease-resistant variety (and our most popular) is our locally grown 'Frost' peach. Even with natural resistance, young trees are subject to leaf curl and will develop resistance with maturity.

Your current diseased leaves will fall off, and fresh, healthy foliage will emerge by mid-summer. Preventative spraying in mid-December, January, and February with copper spray will prevent the problem.

Sincerely,

John Christianson

Christianson's Summer Classes Return!

New! Evening Gardening Classes at Christianson's

The Great Succulent Migration

Wednesday Evening, July 15, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

class size is limited class fee $8

please check in at the Garden Store before class

Self-sufficient, low maintenance, and adaptable tropical and subtropical succulents continue to be a phenomenon. Perfectly suited to a changing climate, succulents grow in wondrous fractal forms. We often limit our use of succulents to indoor container planting, but did you know about the varieties that may be grown outdoors?

Our Houseplants and Grasses Buyer, Eric Andrews, brings some varieties outdoors where they develop more vivid color and interest than their housebound counterparts. In class, learn specific transplant methods about this diverse plant group, both in the ground and in containers, along with some of Eric’s favorites.

For reservations, email us or call 360-466-3821

Curbside Pick-Up Service Continues

For those who have specific plant lists or gift ideas and would prefer not to shop in person, we continue to offer curbside pick-up service. To learn more about it visit ChristiansonsNursery.com. Curbside orders require 48 hours turnaround.

Please note: Christianson’s Nursery is an essential business and is not a place to gather socially. We practice social distancing even while wearing masks and appreciate it when our customers do the same.
