Mount Vernon School Board Names New Superintendent

The Mount Vernon School Board has named Dr. Ismael Vivanco as its new superintendent. Vivanco currently serves as the Superintendent for both the Palisades and Orondo School Districts. The board approved Vivanco’s appointment in a unanimous vote on Thursday, March 5, 2020. Vivanco is scheduled to begin on July 1, 2020.

Dr. Vivanco was selected from a large pool of well-qualified applicants for his demonstrated collaborative leadership qualities, focus on equity for all students, and rich background that resonates with staff, students, and community.

Board President, Larry Otos, said, “The board has been working on this process for five months, the pool of candidates that applied for the position was deep, well-experienced, and diverse. The three finalists were reviewed by the board and long deliberations continued as we looked at our three finalists. We are grateful for the input from staff, students, and community members, all of which the board took into account as we reviewed each candidate.”

During the interview process, Vivanco expressed his interest in the Mount Vernon School District, specifically the diverse community it serves. Dr. Vivanco commended the district for its positive work being done on equity, diversity, and inclusivity for all students.

Director Otos said, “The board was impressed with Dr. Vivanco’s passion for educating the whole student and belief in equity for all. Dr. Vivanco brings the enthusiasm, drive, and energy that became abundantly clear in the interview process. Vivanco will be a change agent for our district as we move forward.”

Three finalists visited the district this week touring schools, meeting with staff, students, and community members, and leading a public forum.

Vivanco will take over the superintendent position from Dr. Carl Bruner who is retiring after leading the Mount Vernon School District for sixteen years. Vivanco will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Mount Vernon School District, including management of its $110 million budget, approximately 1000 employees, ten schools, and numerous programs and partnerships. Dr. Vivanco will take over on July 1 from Dr. Carl Bruner, who is retiring after sixteen years of successful leadership in the Mount Vernon School District.

Otos added, “The board would like to express their sincere appreciation for Dr. Bruner's leadership and commitment to the students, staff, and community of Mount Vernon. We wish him well in his retirement. We'd also like to welcome Dr. Vivanco and are confident that he will continue the success of the district.”
