Celebrating Mothers on Mother’s Day at Christianson’s Nursery

Although the coronavirus has re-shaped all Mother’s Day celebrations this year, it can’t stop you from celebrating the Mothers in your life. Here are a few gift ideas to make gift-giving a quick and easy process.

Consider bringing home a blooming dogwood tree for a special Mother’s Day gift. All varieties will be 20% off during Mother’s Day Weekend. Unique to Christianson’s are our flowering hanging cedar baskets (14”) and coco-lined wire baskets (14” or 16”) each created by our in-house designers to repeat bloom and to bring enjoyment throughout the summer. For a small delight, pick up one of our tiny violas potted in vintage teacups with matching saucers, or choose a flowering planter basket in a colorful combination, both located near the Garden Store entrance.

For those who have specific plant lists or gift ideas and would prefer not to shop in person, we now offer a curbside pick-up service here at Christianson’s Nursery! You can learn more about our new curbside service or at ChristiansonsNursery.com. Curbside orders require 48 hours turnaround.

Please note: During this highly sensitive time, we remind you that Christianson’s Nursery is an essential business

and is not a place to gather socially. We practice social distancing even while wear masks and appreciate it

when our customers do the same.

Depending on your zone, you may either be anticipating the violet, pink, or white buds of a lilac to bloom or you may be cupping a cluster of the sweetly perfumed blossoms to your nose. No matter which state they are in, the energy of lilacs bursting forth is universally celebrated for their nostalgic fragrance and symbolism of mid-spring. Right now, Christianson's Nursery has many different colors, varieties, and sizes of lilacs, including variegated varieties, all of which will deliver an old-fashioned feel and fragrance to your garden.

Whether in shrub or tree form, lilacs, or Syringa vulgaris are hardy and require little maintenance. Plant in full sun and, to ensure a steady supply of replacement shoots on young wood, prune off one-third of the oldest shoots to the ground each year from around the base right after the plant blooms.

There may be no better way to show your outdoor style than with a beautifully designed floral container for your porch or entryway. Christianson’s Nursery offers custom designed containers for patios, terraces, walkways, front porches, decks, and tabletops (based on our available inventory). Our custom containers include the appropriate soil and time-released fertilizer so your plants will thrive through the season.

We also think beyond annuals. Planting a container using fresh herbs and vegetables adds a freshly-picked convenience to your culinary repertoire when cooking for family or friends. Or, have us plant a mix of deciduous and evergreen foliaged plants with flowering additions, such as hydrangeas and hellebores, for year-round enjoyment.

Bring your containers into the Nursery or purchase from our vast selection. Our designers will consult with you on color preferences and the location of your containers (sun or shade) so they are created to your liking. Charges are determined by the cost of the plants and soil, with an expert designer labor charge of $60.00/hour. To schedule a design consultation, contact custom container designers Elissa or Laura at 360-466-3821.

Ask John!

John loves hearing from his customers and they love to ask him questions!

Each conversation features a question submitted by people like you.

Q: Hi John, I have heard of three different ways to fertilize azaleas and am hoping for clarification. The first is that azaleas need no fertilizer before, during, or after blooming. The second is they need fertilizer just before they bloom, and the third, they need fertilizer after they bloom. We live up the hill from the Nursery where we have a slightly colder micro climate and our azaleas have yet to bloom. What do you suggest, John?

Thank you,

Susan D., Pleasant Ridge, Mount Vernon

A: Dear Susan,

Azaleas (as well as Rhododendrons) are easy to grow and are well adapted to the Pacific Northwest. Because of their shallow roots, keeping them well-watered while getting established in critical. Ample composted organic matter around the plant makes moisture retention much easier.

Applying organic fertilizer is beneficial twice a year. We recommend using E.B. Stone's Rhododendron, Azalea, and Camellia fertilizer for acid-loving plants, which is sold at the Garden Store. Fertilize in February or early March to enhance growth and improve health. However, the most critical time is late May or June for feeding. All flowers are produced the previous year on new growth. Fertilizer in June ensures great flowers next spring. Prune right after blossoms fade to keep them full and bushy and loaded with buds for next year.

Sincerely,

John Christianson
