Local Food Waste Event Features National Experts

Sustainable Connections announces guest speakers for an upcoming virtual event, Waste & Whatnot: The Future of Wasted Food. The organization is also helping to promote a similar international event, Stop Food Waste Day.

Sustainable Connections' virtual discussion takes place on Tuesday, April 13th from 4-5:30pm PST and features national experts sharing their knowledge and experiences about how we could change the way food establishments operate so things don’t just go “back to normal” but instead go forward towards change. The event is geared toward food industry workers but is open to anyone with a passion for reducing food waste.

One featured panelist includes Jackie Wincek, Procurement and Sustainability Specialist for DC Central Kitchen (DCCK), the iconic nonprofit and social enterprise that combats hunger and poverty through job training and job creation. The organization provides hands-on culinary job training for individuals facing high barriers to employment while creating living wage jobs and bringing nutritious, dignified food where it is most needed. DCCK’s social ventures include serving scratch-cooked farm-to-school meals in DC schools, delivering fresh, affordable produce to corner stores in neighborhoods without supermarkets, and operating a fast-casual cafe.

Once described as the non-activist activist by Edible Seattle, Chef Craig Hetherington, Seattle Culinary Academy’s chef instructor, will also be joining the panel of experts. His career history includes Executive Chef at Taste Restaurant inside the Seattle Art Museum and he is known for supporting local producers and farmers as well as teaching guests and cooks about the importance of sustainably raised food and its effects on the environment.

On a larger scale, Stop Food Waste Day takes place on April 28th, where more than 25 amazing speakers will participate in a virtual discussion about the food waste crisis and share practical ways in which we can all play our part to reduce our waste. Stop Food Waste Day is coordinated by Compass Group PLC and Food Tank and is free for anyone to register.
