Mount Vernon Levee Repair Triggers Closures

With Skagit River levels expected to rise late Saturday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers notified the City’s Public Works Department late Wednesday that Corps of Engineers crews would begin repairing an erosion point near Lions Park early Thursday morning, through Friday.

The repair work will require the closure of the parking lot and most facilities at Lions Park; as well as a section of the Riverwalk, from 6 a.m. Thursday morning into Friday night.

Additional impacts are anticipated for drivers along Freeway Drive, with traffic guards stationed near the south end of Lions Park for traffic control.

Erosion repair efforts such as this are not uncommon for levee systems, and the reinforcement of the levee at Lions Park will help to ensure that residents and businesses in the area enjoy continued protection from future floods.
