We are thrilled to have Dan Hinkley – a renowned gardener, teacher, writer, lecturer, consultant, nurseryman, and naturalist – share a presentation on his favorite plants that he has collected in his gardens over the years. If you know Dan, you know he is committed to solid and sustainable horticultural practices, discovering above-average garden plants, designing landscapes of distinction, and raising the collective awareness of the diversity of plant life on Earth, as well as the magic and mysteries of our natural world.

Dan will discuss a bevy of plant species, including trees, shrubs, vines, and perennials that he has developed a long-lasting love affair with after tending them in his gardens on the Kitsap Peninsula for four decades. Amongst those will be the stalwarts that sally forth despite all our climate can throw at them, as well as those he knows he will sometimes lose from the indignities of the Fraser River valley. Using his template of what makes a good garden plant (good foliage, winter structure, offseason blossom and fragrance, and the general willingness to live) he will take us on a virtual tour of his current garden, Windcliff, in Indianola, WA, as well as his first garden, Heronswood, to briefly admire his tried, true, and frequently forgiven favorite plants.

As the ground begins to warm, dormant weeds are preparing to emerge and quickly multiply and go to seed. For this reason, it is never too early to begin controlling pesky weeds in your garden. Join Sarah Wagstaff from SUOT Farm in a discussion on early weed maintenance, combating weeds that never give up, non-toxic methods, cover crops, tools, solarization, and occultation. You can also join her "Midday Murder Club" by using boiling water to eradicate otherwise bothersome weeds. This class is a great opportunity to prepare yourself for combating the weeds that insist on making a home in your garden.
