Welcoming May

May signals the time of sowing seeds in the garden and creating containers to dress up our outdoor living spaces. The evenings are warming up, meaning most annual plants can be left outside through the night. With the spring enthusiasm we have seen from our customers here at the Nursery, we would like to offer a few suggestions to ensure a successful start to the growing season.

Tips for growing annuals this spring:

·    If nighttime temperatures drop to the low 40s, tuck your containers and hanging baskets inside. You can also use cloches to protect sensitive plants already in the garden.

·    Consistent watering is essential. Plants in the ground require watering every 3 to 4 days if we haven't received adequate rainfall.

·    Hanging baskets and containers require watering every 2 days or so. If you notice that the pot or container feels light, it is time to water. It is also important that your pots and hanging baskets have good drainage so they are not sitting in water for an extended period of time.

·    Fertilizing with a rose and flower food also gives your plants a good start at the beginning of their growing season.

Give the Gift of a Hanging Basket

No matter what your garden size, there is always room for beautiful flowering hanging baskets. Use to add color and interest to a porch, balcony, deck, sunroom, or give as a delightful Mother's Day gift. Each cedar basket is planted by our in-house designers to flourish with an abundance of flowers and trailing annuals for repeat bloom in the sun or shade and to bring enjoyment throughout the months ahead.

With over 1000 planted, you will find a wide assortment of mixed flowers in 14-inch hanging cedar baskets and 14-inch coco-lined wire baskets in stunning color, monochromatic shades, or all-white themes. We also have an enticing selection of mixed annual baskets and fuchsia baskets for shady porches and living spaces.

A Mother's Hands

Do you notice the hands of the maternal figure in your life? The chances are they often hold bouquets of flowers, caress cheeks, wipe tears, tie the shoes of little feet, and hold and kiss knees and elbows. They make art. They work machinery, high-five, pinky-promise, give encouraging gestures, shake hellos, and wave goodbyes. They may be stained with soil from hours spent in the garden and kissed with spots from the sun. They cheer to new beginnings and embrace bittersweet conclusions. In many ways, mother’s hands bridge the world of experience and wisdom, to the young, eager and exciting world their children are encountering. The comfort and hope felt through the hands of the maternal figures in our lives remind us that on this day (and all days) to hold our mother’s hands as they have held ours for so many years.

A Rosy Day Out

Sunday, June 26th

9 am- 6 pm

After the extreme weather we experienced this past winter, we are looking forward to June when we have our 19th Annual Rose Festival under the big tent centered in the beautiful Schoolhouse Rose Garden. This annual festival is beloved by the gardening community, and we always enjoy rose-related conversations throughout the day. This year, we will have wonderful discussions to attend and hope to see you in the gardens.

“A Rosy Day Out” includes a community rose display and competition in the Schoolhouse, an ice cream social in between morning and afternoon speakers, and sitting together with like-minded gardeners in the Schoolhouse Rose Garden while listening to keynote speakers. Last year, with the hot weather, the rose garden looked incredible with all the garden roses showing off their colors and enchanting us with their fragrances.

This year, we will celebrate garden roses, showcase a community rose display and rose competition (judged by the Tri-Valley Rose Society), and of course, offer tips, tricks, and experienced knowledge on rose care. And who doesn’t love to hear our favorite “Rose Buds” Ciscoe and John enthusiastically share their favorite rose companions…and give away plants too!
