"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time."

~ John Lubbock

Skagit Valley Farmers Market

Visit the Skagit Valley Farmers Market Every Sunday!

10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. through October 2nd

Our mission at the Skagit Valley Farmers Market is to build lasting connections between our community’s residents and the stewards of our farmland, as well as showcase local cultural arts. We strive for a cooperative and family-friendly atmosphere that promotes mutually beneficial interactions among the producers and local residents.

This season we will continue to showcase the bounty of Skagit-grown fruits, veggies, and handmade crafts of local farmers and artisans. Visitors are welcome to take a seat inside the Vinery and enjoy market sweets and good conversation while observing local photographs on pea vining. We hope the Skagit Valley Farmers Market offers a space for experienced and new farmers to share their wisdom, their harvest, and their joy of farming with the locals, as well as out-of-town visitors.

Consider making the Skagit Valley Farmers Market part of your new Sunday ritual. The Market is located just north of Christianson's Nursery and takes place around the Vinery on Sundays through October 2nd, from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Creating a Garden Sanctuary

reservations required

class fee: $20

please check in at the Garden Store before class

 We all need a personal sanctuary where we can be in harmony with the natural world and can nurture our bodies, minds, and souls. One of the best places to create sanctuary is in our own gardens.

 Author Jessi Bloom will share tips on designing healing spaces and medicinal and sacred plant profiles that are easy to use. Equal parts inspirational and practical, this lecture will have you looking at your garden in a new light, from how to harness the healing properties of plants, to simple instructions for daily rituals and practices for self-care using your space and plants.

Assembling Mid-Summer Blooms

Sunday, August 28th

11:00 a.m. - noon

reservations required

class fee: $25

please check in at the Garden Store before class

 Anne Long is back! Local flower farmer, Skagit Valley Farmers Market vendor, and owner of The Dahlia House, Anne is eager to share with you a mid-summer arrangement class. She will discuss late blooming perennials and annuals that are perfect for mid-summer arrangements. There is often a lull in summer blooms during the month of August, but Anne will demonstrate that by planting certain varieties, you can have cut flowers through the seasons. During this class you will learn to assemble your own hand-tied bouquet to take home.

Mid-Summer Care for Outdoor Plants
As the weather warms, it becomes increasingly important to stay on top of watering. Our tips for keeping your plants healthy during the warm summer months include:

·    Water thoroughly in the morning so roots are completely saturated (watering thoroughly less often is better than shallow watering more often)

·    Add mulch or compost around new plants to help retain moisture

·    Use soaker hoses that can be set on a timer for deep watering

Plant Spotlight: Albizia julibrissin
Albizia, or Mimosa tree, is a deciduous, small- to a medium-sized tree reaching around 20 to 40 feet tall. Mature trees produce pom-pom-like flowers in clusters on new growth. The flowers are pink and lightly fragrant and flower throughout the month of July and August. They have a wide growth habit and broad canopy creating dappled shade when they are mature plants. They love subtropical climates and take hot, humid climates as well. Our favorite varieties are Albizia 'Rosea' and 'Summer Chocolate'.
